Bipolar Disorder Q&A

What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder is an umbrella term for three conditions: bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymic disorders. Your symptoms depend on which type of bipolar disorder you have:

Bipolar I disorder

While bipolar I causes mood swings between mania and major depression, your provider can diagnose the condition after an episode of mania, whether or not you experience depression.

The manic episodes caused by bipolar I disorder last at least one week, causing severe symptoms that make it impossible to meet your daily responsibilities and often need hospitalization to restore balance.

Bipolar II disorder

Swings between major depression and hypomania define bipolar II disorder. Hypomania is less severe than full-blown mania. Instead of disrupting your daily life like mania, hypomania often feels like positive energy fostering productivity.

Cyclothymic disorder

Cyclothymic disorder causes mild depression and hypomania. Even with mild symptoms, you have many frequent mood swings for at least two years. Over two years, you have symptoms at least half the time.

What symptoms does bipolar disorder cause?

Mania and hypomania cause the following symptoms (with differing severity):

  • Feeling elated, irritable, or jumpy
  • Having constant energy
  • Talking excessively or rapidly
  • Needing little to no sleep
  • Experiencing racing thoughts
  • Desiring pleasurable activities (whether food, sex, alcohol, or drugs)

During a manic episode, people with bipolar I disorder may have hallucinations (hearing, seeing, feeling, and smelling things that aren’t there).

Whether you have mild or major depression, you experience the following symptoms:

  • Feeling sad and hopeless
  • Having little or no energy
  • Giving up activities they enjoy
  • Having insomnia or sleeping too much
  • Finding it hard to concentrate
  • Feeling irritable or restless

Depression may also cause thoughts of death and suicide. If you can’t shake these thoughts, call the suicide and crisis hotline at 988.
